Assam’s ‘mising’ river culture: floating houses and the art of living with water

The Mising people, who migrated to Assam’s river plains centuries ago, have perfected a way of living with flood: houses raised on stilts, granaries built on high platforms, and a calendar ordered around the river’s rise and fall.

Their songs and dances carry the river’s moods, and their riverine settlements are a living archive of adaptation.

Climate change is testing the tradition: floods come higher and stay longer. But the Mising response — flexibility, mobility, community — remains the region’s best teacher.
