Kaziranga opens its eastern range as rhino census numbers climb to 2,700

Kaziranga’s eastern Agoratoli range opened to visitors this season, giving tourists a new gateway into the grasslands and easing pressure on the crowded central circuit.

The decision follows the latest census, which counted more than 2,700 one-horned rhinos — a modest rise over the previous count and a vindication of the park’s armed anti-poaching patrols.

Forest officials caution that the real test is the annual flood: last year’s deluge drowned 30 animals, and work on elevated refuges continues.
