Guwahati metro moves a step closer as state cabinet clears funding model

The Assam cabinet cleared the financing model for the Guwahati metro’s first 22-kilometre corridor, linking Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport with the city’s central business district.

Officials describe the project as the region’s most consequential infrastructure bet in decades, with tunnelling planned under the Brahmaputra’s banks and a station design that references Assamese weaving patterns.

Critics question the fare economics in a city that still runs on two-wheelers, but planners argue the metro is a climate decision as much as a transport one.
