Aizawl to Haflong: the new hill road that rewires Mizoram’s northern links

The road that will link Aizawl to Haflong — 300 kilometres through some of the region’s most landslide-prone terrain — is more than asphalt: it is Mizoram’s second lifeline.

The state currently depends on a single corridor to Assam’s railway head at Silchar, and the monsoon closes it with tedious regularity.

Engineers are using bio-engineering — deep-rooted grasses and bamboo grids — to hold the cut slopes, a technique borrowed from the very landscape the road crosses.
